Weekend Wear : Choosing Peace & Bravery over PSLs and Ankle Booties

Being a business owner is one heck of an experience.

Long days, days that are too short, and those that are so in-between that you feel constantly in limbo…each have their place & are a part of it all. You probably have experienced this too in your own career, whatever that is. You’ve also probably experienced the power of a really good book and the power of a few deep breaths.

That brings me to today.
Where I’m at.
And how I’m doing.
My recent blind spots & my aha’s.

If you were to come over, this is how I’d look.
How you’d see me.
High pony tail and all.

But what you’d also see is a different Tara than the one from last week. Over the phone, I told my fiance that my mind just felt so chaotic, that I couldn’t get a grip on tasks. Oh and that I was hyper-sensitive to people’s opinions and “well-meaning” comments.

Then he asked one simple question:
“When was the last time you felt like you were ‘on top of it’ & good about yourself?”
Then the follow up came,
“What were you doing then that you aren’t doing currently & why?”

Oh you mean, getting enough sleep? Eating until I’m full not just enough to get me by because I’m late for xyz? Creating daily lists? Goals? Yoga? Diving into an inspiring book because I want to?

Unconsciously, all the necessities of a happy and fulfilled life were chucked out the window. All in the name of, “busy.” But is all that “busy,” worth it if you’re a cryin’ mess? I don’t think so.

HEY YOU, GIRL.
I see you.

You might be good about happily touting other people’s stories. Good at that social game. But what story are you telling yourself, today, right now? What’s the author inside your mind penning? Is it a positive one or a self-defeating one?

I’ll let you discover your own answer.

But I’m cheering that it’s one that changes your day & perspective. It might not change your circumstances, your to-do list, or your relationship status. But small steps produce better results every time.

I’ll leave you with a thought from, yes – an inspiring book:

An Essentialist produces more – brings forth more – by removing more instead of doing more…When faced with so many tasks and obligations that you can’t figure out which to tackle first, stop. Take a deep breath. Get present in the moment and ask yourself what is most important this very second – not what’s important tomorrow or even an hour from now. If you’re not sure, make a list of everything vying for your attention and cross off anything that is not important right now…

If you have correctly identified what really matters, if you invest your time and energy in it, then it is difficult to regret the choices you make.

You become proud of the life you have chosen to live.

— Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. – Greg McKeown

A woman who’s disposition is peaceful & brave – one who chooses joy – is really, the most beautiful thing ever. It’s better than any new clothes she could buy.  It’s better than adorable ankle booties & PSLs.

“…Strength & dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future.”
Cheers to the weekend!

Always,
–Tara M.

  • This went straight to my heart: "You might be good about happily touting other people’s stories. Good at that social game. But what story are you telling yourself, today, right now? What’s the author inside your mind penning? Is it a positive one or a self-defeating one?" I’m going to go make a cup of coffee, take a deep breath, and live in the present by accomplishing one little thing for college midterms. Thank you for your encouragement!
