WEEKEND WEAR [TRAVEL EDITION] : Urban Style on the New England Coast

It’s not everyday that I get to tour around New England and see lighthouses, the ocean, and crazy old buildings. And when I was packing for my trip to Maine last week, I ventured into the more urban street-style side of my wardrobe. Or at least, what I envision New Englanders to wear. Johnny (the ever faithful tour guide and Maine native), Zac (a dear friend and fellow style expert) and I stopped by Nubble Lighthouse before going into the city. The sun gleaming on the rocks and the blue sky above made it all absolutely breathtaking!

The Look: I went with my favorite (and warmest) pants I packed – the high-waisted skinnies and paired them with a lightweight, jersey crop-top.

What works: Whenever a shirt has a l boat-neck neckline, consider adding a long necklace to move the eyes down rather than across. I wanted the outfit to be simple, but I went a bit more complex with three braids in my hair – one pulling the bulk of my hair over to one side – to add interest. Also note the fitting of the pants as my “structured” element to compensate for the loose crop-top. And, as always, when there are neutrals, add color. A.k.a. lipstick!

Switch it up: Because I was going to be in Boston all day on shoots, I didn’t have a chance to feature different ways to mix this outfit up. However, switching out the black flats for brown heels and adding a chunky necklace would have done the trick. And really, with pieces this basic, you can do anything!

|| Skinnies: Charlotte Rousse, on sale. Crop-Top: Old Navy, clearanced. Necklace: Rummage sale. Flats: Old Navy, on sale. Rings: Handmade spoon ring and the other one is my mom’s. Location: The Nubble Lighthouse.

P.S. There will be more Maine/Boston shoots coming soon featuring Zac of Brothers & Craft and Johnny who could just be a model any day…

Happy Friday, friends!

Always,

–Tara M.

  • I think that’s the lighthouse that a friend of ours got married at.
